The Danger of Using Old Drivers

When you buy a new mobile phone or a television it can pretty quickly be replaced in the market by better and more efficient models within a matter of months. The same happens with computers but the big difference is that instead of buying a new PC you can often simply update your current model’s drivers to maintain a good performance and get it working as new again.

The main problem is that most computer users are unaware of how to update their drivers, and a lot of the time they aren’t even aware that what they are using isn’t the current model. Because there are few visible signals that you are using an out of date driver – no smoke rising from the machine or alarm bells flashing – it is probably something which you would never really think about checking on your own.

However, if you are having recurrent problems with your machine then there is a pretty good chance that old drivers have something to do with it. The three main problems with not keeping your drivers up to date are listed below.

1. Stability. Whether you use your computer for work purposes or simply for fun and entertainment there are few things more annoying than having your computer crash or freeze on you while you are in the middle of something. This was actually happening a lot to a friend of mine who was just about to buy a new PC when I managed to save him some money by updating his drivers instead, which solved the problem (if you are reading this Graeme you still owe me one for that). Even if you think your computer is in its last days you should spend a bit of time doing things such as cleaning it up and updating its drivers to see if it can maybe be saved.

2. Speed. A lot of us accept this as simply being because “computers slow down over time”. If your PC us now running more slowly than when you first started using it then you shouldn’t just accept this as being inevitable. There are several very good reasons why this could be happening and one of the main ones is the use of out of date drivers. It is also one of the easiest to fix if you use a tool which automatically scans your system and then updates any drivers which are old and slowing down your machine.

3. Safety. This is especially important if you are going to be using the internet, as old drivers are a common reason for people’s security being vulnerable and their PC being susceptible to attack by hackers and viruses. Even if you use a good antivirus program you still your drivers to be working as they should be.

Other signs of an old driver can be poor sound or video quality, problems connecting to the internet and not being able to connect to your printer. These and other annoying issues can be sorted out by using something simple, effective and user friendly such as the highly recommended Driver Commander product.
