Governmental plans hit back at file-sharing
Thursday, November 19th, 2009In what is considered to be the most political speech to be made in over a decade, the Queen outlined various new governmental policies on Wednesday, including the proposition of a Digital Economy Bill. The bill is wide-ranging in its content, but will tackle various facets of broadband legislation, including a change to the way in which illegal downloaders are dealt with.

East Anglia suffers under two-tier broadband speed hierarchy
Tuesday, November 17th, 2009Residents and business owners across the East of England have voiced complaints over the inadequate distribution of high speed broadband in the region. With a large rural population suffering from slow or non-existent broadband connectivity, whilst urbanised areas have generally excellent availability, local commentators have demanded a solution to address the inequality.

Video Game may cause connection problems
Thursday, November 12th, 2009The release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 on November 10th sparked concerns that UK broadband customers would experience connection issues as a result of the millions of online players swamping the game servers. After Michael Jackson’s death earlier in the year saw internet traffic levels soar as people tried to find out as much as they could about the breaking story, fears have been expressed that similar events could, in the short term, compromise broadband connection speeds around the country.
Scottish Broadband Boost and Broadband within the Housing Market
Tuesday, November 10th, 2009Rural broadband availability was always going to be a key concern of the Digital Britain report and minister Stephen Timms has confirmed that customers in isolated parts of Scotland will benefit from a £200 million cash injection as a result. The aim of the new plan is to provide high-speed broadband for rural users in Scotland by 2017. Cities and towns throughout the UK will benefit as part of the plan, despite recent criticism which claims the plan does not go far enough.

Digital Britain report under attack from small business owners
Monday, November 9th, 2009The Government’s Digital Britain report has once more come under attack, this time from the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB). The national chairman of the FSB John Wright criticised the report for taking baby steps rather than bold leaps and called on the Government to provide small businesses with improved support as ecommerce expands further in the coming years.
The cost of universal broadband may hit the poorest first
Wednesday, November 4th, 2009The CEO of TalkTalk has stated publicly that the Government’s Digital Britain guidelines could force 100,000 people to sacrifice their broadband connections in order to fund the expansion of broadband in the UK. The Digital Britain report, which was published earlier this year, dealt with a whole variety of technologies and saw the instigation of a new broadband tax, levied against land line phone bills in the UK.
